What’s the School Committee?
The Newton School Committee consists of nine voting members: one person is elected (citywide) from each of Newton’s eight wards, and the Mayor serves as an ex-officio member.
The School Committee:
- Sets educational goals & policies (“This is the primary role of the SC”–MA Assoc. of SC’s web site)
- Hires and evaluates the Superintendent of Schools (this year’s new School Committee will hire a new Superintendent.)
- Reviews and approves budgets
- Reviews and approves School Improvement Plans for each Newton Public School
- Maintains open communication between the SC and the community
The School Committee conducts public meetings on the second and fourth Mondays from September through June. Meetings are held at 7:30 PM at the Education Center at 100 Walnut Street.
